WeatherView32 Install Notes

  • Installing sanely and clean-up:
start /wait wvsetup.exe /v/qb
del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop\Weather View 32.lnk"
del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop\wv.bat"
del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop\wv64.bat"
move /y "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Weather View 32\Weather View 32.lnk" "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\"
rmdir "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Weather View 32"
  • Data files which it puts in the binaries folder:
    • vh.dat – disable vista/win7 instruction dialog
    • wview.dat – license key
    • Dialout.dat – created on first start (a bunch of NUL's)
    • WS2000_Offset_01.Dat – created on first start (0 bytes) – this seems to keep track of whether the other two databases have been created yet, but maybe does other stuff too… who knows
    • WS2000_Data_01.Dat – create database (one-minute resolution)
    • WS2000_Extremes_01.Dat – create database (extremes)
    • wv_error.log – an error log, readable ASCII text
    • text/ – (folder)
    • text/ftptext.dat – apparently manages where text files are uploaded
    • text/temp/ – (folder) apparently a temporary location for generating text files
    • weatherforyou/ (folder) – ?
    • wv_report/ (folder) – ?
    • active.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • autoboot.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • aw.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time, “Anything Weather (pro)”
    • cornell.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • cpu.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • CWOP.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time, “Citizens Weather Observer Program (pro)”
    • D_sum_wv.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • netwview.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • nexrad.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • nexrad_site.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • rasdial.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • reports.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • uw.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • w_metrics.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • w_metrics_log.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • weather_notes.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • wfu.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time, “Weather for You (pro)”
    • WS2000_Alarm_01.Dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • WS2000_Config_01.Dat – created upon entering main program for the first time, “Weather View Properties”, “Automatically Monitor Weather on Startup”
    • wu.dat – created upon entering main program for the first time
    • fm.dat – nag dialog that tells you how to switch screens
  • “Automatically Monitor Weather on Startup” makes the program start monitoring weather when started, but doesn't actually handle making the program start when the system boots
  • convert.exe (which converts the bmp's for uploaded and saved images) is idiotic. It saves its temporary work files in C:\WINDOWS. WTF? C:\WINDOWS\~gfx100.tmp and C:\WINDOWS\~alt100.tmp are the culprits. It GPF's if it can't write there… because we'd expect nothing less from a program of this caliber, right? – workaround is to give the weather user “create file” permissions for “this folder only” on C:\WINDOWS… the “CREATOR OWNER” ACL takes care of everything else
