  • available in 64-bit only
  • need to enable both ACPI and APIC
  • once installed, needs high-security password for administrator (by default)
  • installing Xen drivers…
    • look at the unattended file: \$ Drivers\Xen GPLPV\\servercore2008-install\unattended.cmd
    • you'll need to click “install this anyway” a few times since the drivers are unsigned
    • the VM will prompt you to restart a couple times – this is normal, but annoying
    • you'll see the “test mode” overlay forevermore – this is normal, but annoying
  • network settings
    • set ip addresses: netsh interface ipv4 set address “Local Area Connection 2” static
    • set dns servers: netsh interface ipv4 set dnsservers “Local Area Connection 2” static primary, netsh interface ipv4 add dnsservers “Local Area Connection 2” index=2, netsh interface ipv4 add dnsservers “Local Area Connection 2” index=3
    • set wins servers: netsh interface ipv4 set winsservers “Local Area Connection 2” static, netsh interface ipv4 add winsservers “Local Area Connection 2” index=2
  • use sconfig
    • change computer name (2)
    • enable all remote management (4) - a reboot is needed during the middle of this
    • enable remote desktop (7,e,1)
    • change timezone (9)
    • join domain (1)
  • activate windows: slmgr -ato
  • allow server to be pinged: netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8
  • print spooler role: start /w ocsetup Printing-ServerCore-Role (this adds the print spooler service)
  • netsh firewall set service fileandprint enable (allow people to connect to the server from elsewhere)
  • remotely configure from another system
